What it really takes to be a superyacht ETO/AVIT engineer. And why I founded MIMO Connect
From the outside, the superyacht world looks incredible ; the travel, the scale of the vessels, and the chance to work with some of the most advanced systems you’ll ever get your hands on.
I was drawn to it for exactly those reasons. The idea of installing and maintaining cutting‑edge tech while travelling the world felt like a dream. But anyone who’s worked below deck knows the reality is very different.
Women who lead: A conversation with MIMO Connect co‑founder Nicci Robertson
For Women’s History Month, we’re proud to feature an in‑depth conversation with Nicci Robertson, co‑founder of MIMO Connect. From her South African roots and life at sea to her work today supporting ETOs, AVIT officers and the wider maritime community, Nicci offers a thoughtful look at leadership, teamwork, family, and the heart behind MIMO’s culture.
This interview explores her journey, the lessons she’s learned, the partnerships she’s built, and the values that guide her; honesty, integrity, transparency, and a genuine desire to make a difference.
A warm, insightful read that celebrates both the woman and the mission behind MIMO Connect.
The double edged sword of digitalisation at sea
Digitalisation is now a defining force in superyachting, shaping everything from entertainment and navigation to crew management and technical diagnostics. It delivers smarter operations, greater efficiency, and a more seamless onboard experience but it also introduces new layers of complexity. As systems become more interconnected, the challenge lies in managing integration, reliability, and evolving technology with clarity and purpose.

Reflecting on a remarkable year
As 2024 draws to a close, we at MIMO Connect find ourselves reflecting on a year filled with growth, camaraderie, and memorable experiences.
Our team, though relatively new to the industry, has embraced every challenge and opportunity with enthusiasm and a shared commitment to excellence. Here, three of our dedicated employees share their highlights from this incredible year.
Elevating our maritime experience with MIMO: A success story
Before MIMO support, our onboard internet was slow, affecting operations and guest experience. WiFi was stuck at 50Mb, and wired connections struggled to hit 100Mb. MIMO's team identified the issue using the MIMO Dome, boosting speeds past 250Mb by bypassing the ship’s WiFi. The bottleneck was our outdated firewall and switches. MIMO recommended updated components and a more efficient firewall. The transformation improved internet speeds, reliability, and ease of use. MIMO’s proactive approach and technical expertise have elevated our maritime experience.
